CharacterWorks - Creating Community

“and may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another”  – 1 Thessalonians 3:12

Community is the word most used when people are asked to describe CharacterWorks. At CWorks, elementary, middle, and high school students come together working along side their parents and siblings to achieve a common goal. In a world where people are often disconnected, CharacterWorks brings people together in a united family. Read below to see CharacterWorks parents share what the CharacterWorks community means to their families.

The Thompson Family

"'Dr. Curt Thompson beautifully wrote 'we are all born into the world looking for someone looking for us.' As a mom of four, one of my greatest longings is for people to look upon my children-- each one uniquely made-- with delight, joy, respect and love. I am so thankful for the ways my children have experienced that in the CWorks community. From the excellent and exceedingly fun staff, my kids consistently receive warm encouragement and delight. Perhaps most unique and special to the CWorks culture, the youngest children have the opportunity to get to know and be cared for by the older kids in the program. The encouragement and love that comes from the seniors and juniors towards my children is life-shaping for them. In a world that can sometimes be so cruel and all of our kids are trying to figure out if and where they belong, I'm so thankful for the ways the CWorks family has noticed my kids and said, enthusiastically, 'Oh there you are! We've been looking for you. YES, YOU belong here.'"

The Fitch Family

"My family experienced authentic community through our involvement with Characterworks for many years.

A wonderful thing about the CWorks community is seeing everyone come together and do their part to put on these amazing shows, and this is not something we could accomplish as individuals but must happen through teamwork.

In the process of a community working together onstage and offstage to create incredible CWorks shows, we found that we were also creating a community that extended beyond the theater.

My family saw a beautiful experience of this when my husband was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout this time, we received an outpouring of support from our CWorks community. We were witnesses to what it looks like when a community comes together, bringing what they each have to offer, which creates a picture of what authentic community looks like. We experienced God’s goodness to us through the gifts of our CWorks community."

The Rogers Family

"Watching Maddy start excited and be so enthusiastic with Sprockets was so much fun. She had danced for a few years, but said she wanted to do more.  She jumped in wholeheartedly and we were glad to find a wonderful group that fit so many spaces in her life. As a Christian, homeschooling family, we wanted to find ways for Maddy to be creative, expressive, and be around other kids her age, but in a safe, trust-worthy environment. I have never once questioned leaving her in the charge of all the wonderful teachers and staff of CWorks. I know that they love her and challenge her as much as we, her parents, would. You hold her accountable while teaching her life-long skills and character traits that, honestly, end up coming better at this age from someone other than mom and dad.

When she first auditioned for a show, got in, and we watched her perform the song they learned the first night of rehearsal, I looked at my husband with tears in my eyes and said, 'Welcome to the next 10 years of our lives. She has found her people.' She comes home from class or rehearsals physically exhausted but emotionally and spiritually filled and glowing. I'm not sure how you do it, other than lots of prayer, patience, and clear guidelines, but these kids love you all and soak up every word you say and the love that you pour into them.

I have loved watching some of the older teens pour into the younger kids as well. They have clearly seen love and caring modeled to them, so they pass it on to the next generation. I am so grateful we found CWorks and that it gives Maddy a place to be creative, independent, explore life, build relationships, and most importantly, better understand her love for Christ and his role in her life. We could not be happier to be a part of the CWorks family."
