CharacterWorks - Building Character

While involved in theater classes and performances, students learn to build characters on stage, but the lessons learned build character offstage as well. Students learn to work with a team, stay calm when things don’t go as planned, speak in public, engage their imaginations and creativity, and countless other life skills that they will take with them throughout their lives. The stories below are a picture of the character building happening at CharacterWorks each and every day.

Alumni Stories

"My name is Lindsay Gregory (Rodgers) and I was part of CharacterWorks from 6-12 grade and it was my favorite thing to do, place to go and people to be with. I grew so much in my musical ability, love for storytelling and made lifelong friends. Today, I am a worship leader in a local church outside of Atlanta, GA and I often find myself thinking about my days at CharacterWorks. Many of the vocal techniques that I use everyday were things I developed through the years of singing in different musicals. My stage presence and confidence in leading people is another direct result from my time on stage. But what I remember most was the focus on finding Christ in the story and in the characters of each show we did. It was such a fun, exploration of my faith that grew so much in those years. God used CharacterWorks in my life to grow my creative gifts in such an encouraging and safe atmosphere. I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am today without my years at CharacterWorks."

“CWORKS gave me a such confidence in my childhood/youth, that now as an adult, I can (and often HAVE TO) push myself out of my comfort zone. My posture, tone, communication, eye contact, breath control, listening skills and self-discipline are just some of the tools I gained from my many years at CWORKS, that now I actively use while raising a family and running a business!”

- Wendy Pickenpaugh (Amadee), Class of 2010, Owner of Brain Balance Midlothian

"CWorks taught me how to be confident in myself and grow into the man I am today."

- Max Foster, Class of 2020

Parent Story

"My four kids were involved in CharacterWorks for several years, and I am thankful for the organization's community, fun, and mission as well as the character lessons that they developed through their involvement.  A few of the critical life skills that my kids developed were disciplined preparation – memorizing hundreds of lines and dance steps through a combination of group and solo rehearsal, ownership – they had accountability for their performance and the entire team was counting on them to perform their role, and collaboration – taking direction from show directors to bring the artistic vision to life while working with peers to bring forward the best performance possible.  My two oldest have graduated college and launched their professional careers, and the skills that they’ve developed at CharacterWorks have proven invaluable."

- Steve Radabaugh, CWorks Alumni Parent, Board Member
